Just as the lights are being turned on to expose a massive, multi-million dollar Somali daycare fraud operation, Washington State Senator Lisa Wellman has decided to play the role of the legislative human shield. As the scandal hits the fan, Wellman has pre-filed a bill that appears to provide structural protection for the very operations currently under investigation for bleeding public funds dry. It’s a bold move: while the public wants handcuffs, the Senator is offering a legislative hug.
[OUR TAKE] This is grounded absurdity at its finest. Usually, when a massive heist is uncovered, the government’s job is to chase the money; instead, Lisa Wellman is busy building a fortress to make sure the money stays exactly where it shouldn't be. We’ve seen a lot of garbage in the bin, but drafting a bill to protect a fraud ring while it's still being exposed is a level of bureaucratic arrogance that even we didn't see coming. We’d ask for the Senator’s reasoning, but when you’re busy shielding a scam, the paperwork usually speaks for itself.
